The Ten Commandment of Weight Loss

I just found this article about Dr. Oz Ten Commandments of Weight Loss.  They seem pretty straightforward and easy to follow.  Some of them pretty easy to put into place immediately.  Some not so easy, but I'm gonna try.

1. Thou Shalt Not Wear Pants that Stretch
Your clothing is an early-warning system for weight gain. When it's getting hard to snap your jeans, you know it's time to be vigilant. Wearing stretchy clothes allows you to live in ignorance of how your body is growing, making it easier to pack on pounds without knowing it.  Um, I don't really have any stretchy pants...so I think I am good here.

2. Thou Shalt Not Keep Fat Clothes in Your Closet
When you keep the clothes you wore at an unhealthy weight, it gives you a back-up plan if the pounds don't come off. Instead, force yourself to stay on track by 86ing your "fat pants."  I've gone past all my "fat clothes" sizes.  I still have the smaller clothes...can I keep those as motivation?

3. Thou Shalt Not Eat Meat That Walks on Four Legs More Than Once a Week
Meat that comes from an animal with 4 legs is higher in saturated fat (the unhealthy kind) than that which comes from 2-legged animals such as chickens, or animals with no legs, like fish. Plus: women who eat large amounts of red meat more than once a week have a 50% higher chance of dying from heart disease and have higher cancer rates.  We have been eating more Turkey, Chicken and Fish so this really isn't even a problem for us.

4. Thou Shalt Not Graze
Plan your meal before you open the refrigerator, get what you need, and close the door. Opening it throughout the day leads to impulsive choices and overeating.  One of my biggest problems.  I tend to graze throughout the day than stop and eat a meal.  No bueno!

5. Thou Shalt Not Eat After 7:30pm
When you eat late at night you are more likely to be eating in front of the TV (when you won't pay attention to how much you're putting in your mouth) and you're more likely to pick high-calorie snacks.  Again, one of my problem areas.  I like to snack while watching TV or working on the computer.  Have to work on cutting it out..

6. Thou Shalt Not Pile Food More than 1 Inch High or Within 2 Inches of the Plate Edge
Larger portions equal more calories. 'Nuff said.  I don't think I'm guilty of this...at least not often.

7. Thou Shalt Not Chew Food Less than 20 Times Per Bite
Chewing allows your body to realize that you are eating food, prompting it to create a sensation of fullness at the appropriate time. When you don't chew enough, you get ahead of that process, eating well past when you are actually satisfied. Some days I don't feel like I chew my food at all. I'm a fast eater and could really benefit from taking my time.

8. Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Plate
Spend your day nibbling bites on someone else's sandwich or afternoon snack, and you will add on 1,000 calories easy.  Not a problem

9. Thou Shalt Not Carry Small Bills
Nothing loves a small bill better than a vending machine. When you have them at the ready, you are one step closer to an impulsive, calorie-loaded afternoon slip up.  So true!  I only use the vending machines at work when I have change in my purse.  It's better to just empty it out into the coin jar when I get home.

10. Thou Shalt Not Eat While Standing Up
Eating sitting down enables you to be aware of what you're eating and eat it slowly so that your body can tell you your full before it's too late.  Not usually a problem

Eda-what?

This is my new favorite snack. We found some edamame in the frozen food section of the grocery store and they were super easy to prepare. Just steam them in the bag and add salt. We also found them at Costco. It comes as a box of 12 individually wrapped serving boxes that you can throw in the microwave. The ones we found at Costco are definitely a better price, but either way it is YUMMY!

Edamame are green soy beans. Eda means branches and mame means beans in Japanese. The name, edamame, came from that green soy beans are harvested while beans are attached in branches. In East Asia, the soybean has been used for over two thousand years as a major source of protein and contains all the essential amino acids. It is rich in calcium, iron, zinc, and many of the A and B vitamins. It is also a rich dietary source of isoflavones which act as Phytoestrogens that may help protect against cancer, osteoporosis and may reduce symptoms of menopause. Edamame is consumed as a snack, a vegetable dish, used in soups or processed into sweets. As a snack, the pods are lightly boiled in salted water, and then the seeds are squeezed directly from the pods into the mouth with the fingers.

I'm down 9lbs. and Jed is down 11lbs. Granted a lot of that might be water weight and we did our "official" weigh-in in our clothes...but it is a start. Ma and pa, how did you do this week?
